As a treat once in a while, a donut won’t kill you- But, don’t call it breakfast. Scones, muffins, and anything else from the bakery are short on nutrients and high on the gylcemic index, meaning their refined carbohydrates digest quickly and raise blood sugar, which can leave you fat and tired. The latest diet research tells us that breakfast should be big- a full quarter of our caloric intake (approximately 625 calories for most [people]) – and, full of slow-digesting carbs, such as oats which provide sustained energy until lunch time, as well as protein from foods like yogurt and nuts, and fiber from fruits and vegetables both of which help make your stomach feel full and provide the added nutrients your body needs. But don’t worry, breakfast doesn’t need to be a chore and it doesn’t need to be boring. There are still plenty of sweets to eat, some fast food is acceptable, and, yes, eggs are still on the menu.
