My father was recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes. There is so much conflicting information out there, I am wondering from those who have been dealing with this condition what is the best “diet” to keep it under control. Using the “glycemic index” as a guide going forward, what would be the bare bones necessities. I had heard giving up all sugar, including carbs was necessary. His newly appointed nutritionist doesn’t say to get rid of carbs, but to get rid of fat. It’s all so confusing, does anyone have a quick & dirty version to share of best, most effective, safest way to proceed? Is it a matter of making sure you combine carbs with protein, or just keeping within the low/mid-range glycmic index and avoiding the high index as much as possible. Thanks for any input.

You can’t give up carbs…almost everything has carbs. And you can’t eliminate sugar either, it’s in most foods in one form or another. He needs to keep carbs to a safe level though. Less than 30g per meal, with one or two 15g snacks per day. Ideally <100g/day. Glycemic index is good, but it’s complicated, so just focus on reducing the carbs for now until he gets used to that, then you can tackle that later.

You can’t give up carbs, they are necessary for a diabetic. All carbs are converted into sugar which give your body energy. My suggestion would be to get a copy of a diabetic diet (your dad’s doctor should have given him one) and then to try to keep the food he eats within the low to mid glycemic index. And yes, it is necessary to have a balance of protein and carbs.
