In this video, I give my perspective on the acceptable sweeteners for those following a low carb diet. A number of new sweeteners have hit the market since Dr. Atkins wrote his book, and while I don’t presume to talk for him, I am giving my perspective on the sweeteners on the market based upon personal experience and meta-analysis of the experts in the field. As with most things, your experience may differ from mine or the norm, and you may be able to consume a particular sweetener and have no side effects and continue to lose weight at the rate expected. One final note — one thing Dr. Atkins said was our food should be as unprocessed as possible, and that we should shop the exterior of the grocery store. Most of the foods sweetened with these items are in the middle or a special health food section. The vast majority of your food on the Atkins Diet should be regular food with natural ingredients. Each day or even meal does not need a dessert to cap it off. www.medicinenet.com Acceptable Sweeteners: * Splenda (sucralose) – granulated or liquid form * Saccharin * Stevia – Natural * Rebiana extract * nutritionwonderland.com * www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov * Oligofructose / Inulin (www.lowcarbfreedom.com * Inulin works just like fiber and is made out of plants like chicory root and isn’t digested like other starches, it isn’t absorbed, so it doesn’t have an effect on blood sugar. * Inulin (IN-yoo-lin) is used as a test to help diagnose problems or disease of the kidneys. @Mumzeeee
wouldn’t a supplement of ‘Acidophilus’ just counter the slpenda issue? In other words, did the study look at people who added good bacteria while being on splenda?

Or perhaps you have no idea what you are talking about…
11:37 pm on April 21st, 2010
The real reason is because you’re consuming too many calories…not too many carbs. There’s nothing wrong with carbs in your decaf. In fact, there’s nothing wrong with Carbs. Just eat a balanced diet and reduce calories slightly as your weight drops. Increase daily activity and that will burn additional caloires.Try to get 5 servings of leafy green vegetables and fruits daily. The amount of natural fiber in your diet will reflect how lean you will become. It’s a CALORIE issue,.not a CARB issue.

To my horror I’ve recently realized that decaf coffee has carbs in it… very few…more like a trace… but still… i’ve going through quite a few cups a day as I love the taste… could that have been the reason why I haven not been losing weight as quickly (i’m still doing Induction – it’s been more than 2 weeks now – but haven’t seen any great results yet
) I’ve switched to decaf tea now, which seems to have a lot less carbs… is that better?

What was the daily intake of the Splenda? Do you have a link to the study?
1:21 am on April 22nd, 2010
@ckrtom2 Evidence indicates that a 12 week administration of Splenda exerted numerous adverse effects, including a reduction in beneficial faecal microflora, an increased faecal pH, and enhanced expression levels of P-gp, CYP3A4, and CYP2D1, which are known to limit the bioavailability of orally administered drugs.

That is one of the reasons I stress the 3 daily limit so much in my videos. It’s so often overlooked, and many people never let their tongue retrain its taste buds to actually taste sweet again without overdosing it. Onions can be almost too sweet at times.
While I might have dessert recipe videos, they should be seen as unique treats or couple a month items. Not every a night necessity…

I honestly don’t have much of a problem with aspartame, but I use it sparingly (mainly just for the occassional drink when a Splenda option is not available). I agree with the low carb candy and mostly about the bars. Too many people use them as a crutch to former bad habits, and real food should be eaten as much as possible.
Thanks for your perspective… The best sweetener is the one that tastes the best to you and doesn’t affect your weight.

I actually have BBQ review video. I actually just purchased 3 of the KC Masterpiece ones last week Monday at SuperTarget. Perhaps I should mine for more at area stores. If that disappears, I will probably make my own with Heinz One Carb Ketchup.
The Walden Farms brand option is just not good eats…

BTW Kent, whats your favorite low sugar BBQ sauce, if you have one? KC Masterpiece has discontinued its version. grrrrrr

I’d like to share my two cents. I don’t blieve in low carb bars or candy, thats just junk. My only sweetener is in my coffee and in the Walmart brand of Koolaid. And yes I use aspartame! I haven’t grown a 3rd eyball or stalled or any health problem. Stevia/Ttruvia was awful. Terrible aftertaste. Splenda was so-so. Ace-K was the best , (name brand Sweet One) but its so hard to find.

Well for complicated and difficulty, I’d say it’s no more difficult than choosing the right gas to put in your car. Once you made the right choice, how difficult is it to make the same choice again and again.
I really have never had a feeling of giving up stuff past the first month or so. I focus on the things I can have without restriction, and the stuff I can’t or am restricted that’s just how I eat now. I simply don’t miss what I never have especially when the alternative is more desirable.

Just fruit is the only sweets I eat (in moderation of course). It’s better to just kick the low-carb sweeteners, your taste buds will slowly adapt over time and you’ll start to notice the other flavours of the food without drowning it in dominanting sweet flavours. It’s also hypothesized that some people may have an insulin response just from the taste of something sweet, regardless of it’s carbohyrate content (or even the smell or thought of soon-to-be-consumed sweets).
5:08 am on April 22nd, 2010
Geez, it sure is complicated! And that says nothing for the difficulty of making the DECISION as to what sweetener to go with too yet.
I’m not on Atkins, but have been primarily using Splenda. I guess the ideal thing is to give up the sweeteners altogether. But I like my sugarfree BBQ sauce and syrup and Crystal Light and occasional diet soda. And who wants oatmeal, coffee, or yogurt without sweeteners? To give up all the preceding would be to deny myself even more foods…ughhh…

The real stuff or the stevia extract? I tried the real stuff, and just couldn’t find a brand that I liked.

You are very welcome!

As I got closer to goal, I added flavored seltzer water into my diet.
8:05 am on April 22nd, 2010
Remember while that may be true during Induction (check out my water vid for how “spice” up your water). After Induction, you can add other beverages while still keeping the requirement for water though like milk, even some lower carb juice extracts on the appropriate rungs.
BTW – One can (or 12 oz) of diet soda counts as one serving of sweetener.
Myself during the weight loss phase I drank a lot of water each day. It was just one of those things I chugged and got it done.

Wow talk about being loaded with sweeteners – mannitol, aspartame, ace K, and Splenda on top of it! Holy balls, that is like the quadfecta of sweeteners!

Thanks for the video.

Great video!!! I use Stevia…
11:48 am on April 22nd, 2010
Thanks again for another great video. I guess my problem is, I don’t like to drink plain water all the time. It seems like on Atkins, all you can ever have to drink is plain water, and I like something with a bit of flavor sometimes. The problem is, even a single can or bottle of diet soda contains more than 3 servings of artificial sweetener. What do you generally drink when you want something with flavor?

I have a question, for years I was Diabetic, I had gastric bypass and lost 140lbs they said I no longer have diabetes. , BUT gained 55lbs back. I decided to go low carb diet to lose. NOW when I did have diabetes I used artificial sweetener, Splenda and such which gave me MIGRAINES and as soon as I stopped using them I stopped the migraines. How bad is REAL sugar to use for say tea but not use as much? Carb wise?
